SOMETIMES HOW YOU SAY IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU THINK...

Are you are product of your own propaganda? Are you allowing your self-talk, and the words you are choosing every day to negatively impact your life, your business, and others around you? Studies consistently show us that how we view ourselves and our world is greatly impacted by the choices we make in our vocabulary.

Recently I was reading an article by Nancy Miller in the May 2008 issue of Great Health magazine, called "Wise Words." Now this article was all about how choosing the right words can give you more energy and help you to overcome health issues. But, it got me thinking about how much this concept really applies to those of us in our current market conditions. For instance, do you walk around saying things like: "This market sucks!" or "No one will buy from me today because of the market or because of ____________" or "I can’t be expected to meet those quotas because________?" And, how about if someone asks you how it is going? Do you respond, in a low voice and shrugging your shoulders, "Its ok?" Well, as you already know, if you think you can’t, then you can’t. If you think its ok, then it is going to be just ok.

This article called out "low energy" words such as: problem, lazy, difficult, hard, worry and failure. And, went on to cite "high energy" words such as: beauty, welcome, enthusiasm, harmony, joy and success. The author suggested changing comments like "Don’t worry" to "You’ll be fine." See the shift?

What do you think would happen if instead of phrases like: "This market sucks!" we say something like, "This market presents me with new challenges and opportunities and I am going to work very hard every day to take advantage of those opportunities!"? What would that do to your perspective if you said this enough that you started to believe it and to act on it? I know what would happen, and believe this would make you more successful.

What can you do to ensure that you incorporate this change more successfully? Find a buddy or two to help you. Whenever you hear each other using unproductive or negative words, give each other a signal to switch the thought process to the positive. But, because we are trying to focus on the positive-remember that it is important to recognize the positive steps you are taking. Have your buddy try to catch you doing things right, and in turn you try to catch your buddy doing things the right way as well. Set up goals and milestones and plan a little celebration. Rewarding yourself and each other can go a long way toward changing your behavior! And, I just bet that if you start living each day this way, you are going to find out that this market does offer opportunity to those willing to seek it out.
